After solving the puzzles, we go to sleep and everything starts over. It looks like that in each of the five stages, we get up in the morning, circle the same day on the calendar each time, a member of the hotel staff knocks on us, we go down to breakfast and then look for the door security code.
I like the idea with the aforementioned looped cycle of events, which we try to disrupt step by step. We solve the puzzles elsewhere, and lose contact with Cooper while we complete them, but during these sequences we get some glimpses of memory and we find clues. Thanks to the four-digit codes, we will open the door leading to a series of puzzles, and completing them will reward us with access to the next floor of the hotel – we have five of them in total. The acting of the person impersonating Cooper is as good as in Campo Santo, and the same can be said about the other characters – be it hotel staff or characters from the protagonist’s memories.Ĭontacting Cooper is the first of the narrative layers in the game, where we visit new places in the building and look for clues hiding access codes. The idea for this character immediately reminded me of the game Firewatch, mainly through an assistant with whom the protagonist regularly contacted. From what the woman says, it can be quickly concluded that she knows a lot about the hotel, can circumvent certain security features and perhaps is or was the person involved in creating this place. To get out of this place, we need to trust her and follow her plan. She suggests to the protagonist that he was imprisoned in Penrose against his will, and the whole hotel is a kind of simulation, whatever that means. The mysterious person trying to contact us is a woman named Cooper. In this way, we set up a looping cycle of initially inexplicable events around which a plot was drawn The Spectrum Retreat. A Penrose employee welcomes the protagonist and invites you to breakfast. After a while we hear the doorbell and we see that it is a member of the hotel staff – a strange gentleman with a white, empty lump instead of a head, resembling a dummy in a tuxedo. After a while, a strange, mirror-like device turns out to be a telephone, and messages appearing on its screen suggest that someone is trying to contact our protagonist. The story begins when the main character wakes up in one of the rooms of the hotel called Penrose.
